More on Arabic Names

According to my blog stats, the Arabic Names post is the most popular so far, and has generated several searches for Arabic names, Arabic fantasy names, even Arabic horse names!

For all you folks who want to find Arabic names, you don’t need a row of international baby name books like mine. You just need the internet. You can check out baby name sites, but I like this site, Sudairy.com by Christina al-Sudairy. She has a page each for male and female names and their meanings, a page of Arabic phrases, and a section of her message boards devoted to Arab language. She also has links to Arabic/Middle Eastern music, and Middle Eastern recipes.Yumm!

For a more in-depth, scholarly list, try the Arabic names section of Behind the Name. This gives both English and Arabic script versions, longer meanings and name history, and links to sections on names from other parts of the Middle East. It also has sections for first names from many other cultures.

And here’s a site with a list of  Arabian Horse Names Many people who own purebred Arabians like to give them Arabian names. I assume the names here are suitable for horses, and won’t offend Arabic speaking peoples (I wouldn’t name a horse Muhammad, any more than I’d name my cat Jesus, even if he does think he’s lord and master of the house!)

And hey, if you’re one of the searchers, stop and say hi, and tell me about your search. I’m particularly curious about the search for “Arabic fantasy names.” I wonder if there’s a list somewhere online of names from the Thousand and One Nights?
